How to take the risk out of installing renewable energy measures in your home

Recently the media have highlighted a number of cases involving the installation of domestic renewable energy technologies such as solar panels.

These cases have involved allegedly disreputable installers overcharging for work and not completing installations to a satisfactory standard.

In order to remove the risk from the process of finding an installer the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, the government grant scheme for renewable technologies, can provide a list of accredited installers who all have a proven track record of successful installations.

The programme is managed by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) on behalf of Department of Trade & Industry, and offers grants to householders and organisations to assist with the costs of installing renewable energy measures.

EST offer the following advice to householders considering the installation of renewable energy measures:

- Always obtain three quotes

- Always use an accredited    installer

- Check references
