1. Turning the thermostat down by 1° C can save up to 10% off fuel bills.
2. Remember to turn lights off when leaving a room.
3. When the TV is not in use, turn it off rather than use stand-by
4. Use low energy light bulbs. Replacing ordinary light bulbs with energy saving ones will use around a quarter of the electricity, saving around £10 a year each.
5. Don't leave the fridge door open for longer than necessary, and try to avoid putting warm food straight into the fridge - wait until it has cooled down
6. Wait until you have a full load before using the washing machine, or use the half-load or economy programme if your machine has one
7. Don't overfill the kettle for just one drink, but remember that with electric kettles the element always needs to be covered.
8. A hot water tank jacket costs only a few pounds and can pay for itself in energy savings within a few months
9. When buying a new fridge, freezer, washing machine or tumble drier look for the energy efficiency recommended logo (see attached) or make sure that the appliance is 'A' rated for energy use.
10. Most of the heat from you home escapes through the wall and roof. Installing loft and cavity wall insulation to your home can make considerable energy savings. There are lots of grants and discounts to have this work done.
