About the client

Tom is a private tenant in his 60s. He receives Pension Credit and a disability benefit for a degenerative condition. Old storage heaters kept the downstairs part of the property warm, but there was no fixed heating upstairs and no legal requirement to install any. The landlady didn’t have the funds for additional heaters either. Tom’s nurse suggested he contact us.

What did Tom need help with?

Tom and his Southampton Healthy Homes advisors discussed various options to help him keep warm in the home. His hot water cylinder was also struggling to produce sufficient hot water at the time, so the best long-term solution was to install a combi boiler central heating system. Tom’s property wasn’t connected to the gas network but mains gas wasn’t far away.

How we were able to help Tom

We helped Tom apply for a free gas connection that, once confirmed, allowed us to access the First-time Central Heating Fund. Alongside a financial contribution from his landlady, the grant covered the remainder of the total cost for the central heating system, with a Buy with Confidence installer.

Tom had recently switched electricity supplier, so he needed to apply for the Warm Home Discount despite receiving Pension Credit. We helped him call his supplier, confirm the account number and complete the application form for the discount, which he received later that winter. We also helped him apply for and get a reduced water tariff based on his situation.

Savings and outcomes

  • Southern Gas Network’s Assisted Gas Connection, worth £700, connected Tom’s property to the gas network.
  • Tom received over £3000 in grants for the new heating system, in addition to the landlady’s contribution.
  • The energy efficiency of the property was upgraded from an E47 to a D67 rating and is predicted to save Tom £335 per year on his energy bills.
  • Tom received the £140 discount from his electricity supplier and £120 from his water supplier.
