Southampton StreetTread 

StreetTread is an exciting project that aims to make cycling and walking in Southampton fun and open to all. 

It aims to encourage physical activity and wellbeing in six neighbourhoods noted for their high levels of deprivation and health inequalities, namely Weston, Bevois & Bargate, Outer Shirley, Portswood & St Denys, Swaythling and Thornhill. 

StreetTread will offer walks and cycle rides, cycle training, bike maintenance, afterschool cycling activities, a bike fleet and community maps to identify the best routes for walkers and cyclists in your area. 

Sustrans’ Active Travel coordinator Natalie Gledhill said: “The benefits of exercise are endless, but we don’t always want to spend time and money sweating it out in a gym. Spending little to no money just walking around our own neighbourhoods, cycling to school or work, or going for a stroll and a catch-up with friends can give us the exercise we need without the stress.  No queuing in traffic, no searching for a parking space, and you can feel great about doing something good for the environment too!” 

StreetTread is currently looking for volunteers.  This is an ideal opportunity for anyone looking for experience in the voluntary sector, in physical activity training and in leadership.   

The project is led by Sustrans (registered charity no.326550) and funded by the Big Lottery Fund, Southampton City Council and Southampton City Primary Care Trust.
