ENERGY EXPLORER

Contrary to popular perception, the Energy Explorer is not a spacecraft looking for new sources of energy in the universe!

So what is it?

It is an eye-catching exhibition vehicle that is used to deliver advice so that householders could become more efficient in their use of energy.

You might have seen it roaming about the South East of England.

So who does the advising?

The advisors. Trained staff from the Environment Centre are at hand to demonstrate, talk, explain, guide and even advice about energy efficiency.

How do they do this?

On board the mobile unit there are user-friendly information panels and leaflets for the public to read, as well as practical demonstrations on how to set your heating controls correctly, types of loft and cavity wall insulation, how to get the most from your radiators, everyday products that save energy and alternatives to electric lighting.

We are really proud of our solar tube which lights up the inside of the Energy Explorer using only natural sunlight.

Is that it?

No it is not! We supply up-to-date information and help members of the public who qualify to apply for any current grants towards energy efficiency measures.

The unit has a simple solar cell and small wind turbine set-up which helps to demonstrate the practicalities of having such systems fitted to our homes.

Green lifestyle options, including fuel-efficient driving habits, food miles, recycling, smart metering, energy labelling, water conservation and other carbon saving tips are also explored.

Visitors can even take away a couple of free CFL light bulbs to install at home and start saving energy straight away!

Right. Where and when can I see it?

At high streets, country fairs, fetes, schools and community group events in the area.

How much does it cost to see it?

It is free. Although sometimes it can be part of a county fair or activity that does attract an entrance fee, there is no extra charge at the Energy Explorer itself.

Nothing is free! Someone must fund it?

The local authorities of West Sussex finance the Explorer in return for a number of roadshows each year.

tEC has managed and operated the unit since 2001 on behalf of the local authorities. This means that the advisors do not have to promote the services or products of any manufacturer, energy supplier or installer. This means any advice given is free, independent and impartial.

Additional roadshows can be arranged – for more information please contact us on 01293 438751.

Will the Energy Explorer visit schools?

Of Course! The Energy Explorer is perfect for delivering interesting and exciting educational sessions. Whether it’s a visit to the younger ones from Professor Switch-it-off to introduce the idea of energy efficiency or a session for the older students working on mini environmental audits and advisor role playing to explore issues surrounding changing people mindsets when it come to domestic energy use.

So I could benefit from visiting it?

You just cannot lose!!
