Mike Smith

Commercial Director, Utilicom Ltd.

Commercial Director of Utilicom Ltd since April 2006. Utilicom is the leading developer of District Energy Schemes in the UK.

Formerly Executive Director, Southampton City Council. Mike had responsibility for most Council services during his 29 years of service.

Trained as a Chartered Public Service Accountant, he was the Council’s Director of Finance for several years before moving up to general management. He has previously worked for Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Teesside, and Redcar and Cleveland Councils.

He was been responsible for Southampton District Energy Scheme since its inception in the early 1980’s

Mike was appointed CHP Local Government Champion by the Minister of State and has spent considerable time and effort persuading public and private organisations to develop District Energy Schemes.

He is a Vice President of the Combined Heat and Power Association and formerly a Board Member of Euroheat and Power.

Mike was a member of the Minister’s Advisory Panel on the Community Energy Programme.

He currently sits on the dti/ofgen Distributed Energy Working Group.
