The PLATO Sustain scheme has recently been opened for applications. Drs Derek Moss and Matthew Amesbury were recently invited to present on the subject of carbon footprinting at the “Isle of Wight Eco Island – Next Steps for Businesses” conference organised by Business Link at Yelfs Hotel in Ryde in November 2008. The event was attended by approximately 30 businesses all looking to learn more about a range of environmental and sustainability issues including green marketing and waste management. Following an update on the Eco Island strategy by Cllr David Pugh, delegates attended a choice of practical presentations with a workshop completing the days activities after a hearty and healthy lunch. Matthew Amesbury gave two well-attended presentations on carbon footprinting in the morning sessions including how and why to calculate one and top tips for reducing your businesses’ own footprint. Derek Moss then gave a more detailed workshop with real life examples of calculations which resulted in some lively and thoughtful debate. Feedback from the day indicated that many companies made a commitment to reduce their carbon footprint showing that a successful and enjoyable day was had by all. Slides from both presentations are available on request.
